Drover’s Doughnuts

The shared vision for Drover’s Doughnuts flagship cafe in downtown Solvang was to create a space that can be enjoyed by all ages—a sort of Willy Wonka inspired shop where magic and smiles come together. This isn’t just any doughnut shop; it’s one filled with laughter, memories, and a tribute to the valley we cherish. Our “California Love” palette embodies a fusion of design and color concepts - at its core featuring a base palette of natural materials including concrete, raw plywood, and terracotta tile. We incorporated a whimsical, unexpected color palette and playful detailing inspired by the natural beauty of California and the doughnuts themselves and peppered with place-based accents from the Santa Ynez Valley and Solvang, such as warm leather and Danish modern furniture.

Capitalizing on the unique interior architecture, the shop boasts a fully custom and wildly colorful, large scale acrylic and brass chandelier that welcomes in guests and sits above the main bar. The coffee and doughnut bar feature a “jewelry case” for displaying the day’s doughnuts and lunch offerings. The doughnut counter is set in front of a stunning custom cloud mural spanning the length of the back wall, appearing as a whimsy cloud filled sky from afar but is formed by thousands of highly complex multicolor icons which appear when standing up close. The walls are adorned with bands of raw plywood and wood fiber acoustic material and decorated with colorful rolling bins and spoons as a nod to the shop’s craft. Guests can grab and go or are invited to stay awhile and enjoy the fun cafe seating, a family-friendly farm table, or the lounge with overstuffed seating, games, and a tv.
